Treat Your Persistent Acne with IPL
Acne: Even the word is enough to make you cringe. While many people get pimples during adolescence, others are left with persistent acne into their adult years.
Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells. As a result, your skin is clouded with pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads.
What is your most desired beauty trait? Most of us want clearer, bright skin. If your acne is preventing you from having the skin you’ve always wanted, you can do something about it.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is suggested by dermatologists around the world as a pain-free way to improve skin with acne. At Selah Medi Spa, located in Katy, Texas, we provide IPL to improve the appearance of skin with acne for a fresh, beautiful new look.
Here’s the scoop
Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Your skin is also prone to hundreds of different conditions — acne being the most common.
Sometimes your breakouts might get so bad, you wish you could just hide from the world. IPL is one of the best treatments to help improve acne breakouts and scarring. This cutting-edge treatment addresses acne deep in your skin, leaving you with a clear complexion.
IPL starts with a handheld device that emits high-intensity pulses of light. Unlike a laser, IPL uses a broad-spectrum light that looks similar to a camera’s flash. By administering pulses of light deep within your skin, your body’s natural healing system is kicked into gear to help improve your skin.
When the pulses reach your skin, the energy is consumed by your pigment cells and converted into heat. Over the next few weeks, the heat works to diminish skin imperfections like freckles, age spots, and acne-causing bacteria.
Endless benefits
Improving your acne is reason enough to undergo IPL. While this is one of the best benefits, it’s not the only one.
After your treatment, your skin will work to repair itself and shed its dull, top layer. Elastin and collagen will be in abundance, erasing some of the signs of aging. IPL saves you time and money by addressing multiple skin concerns in one session.
Aside from treating acne, here are some of IPL’s benefits:
- Improves sun-damaged skin
- Eliminates veins
- Erases broken capillaries
- Improves age spots
- Lessens wrinkles
- Addresses rosacea
IPL offers a great alternative for patients with acne who don’t want to take medication.
What's the aftercare like?
Recovery from IPL is quicker than for many other skin and acne treatments — most of our patients heal in a week or less.
Once you leave our office, you might notice your skin is slightly pink or red and may appear swollen. This is completely normal, and will generally subside within 24 hours.
Skin discoloration and sunspots may appear darker, and you might notice some blemishes. While this may seem worrisome, it's a sign that indicates the treatment is working.
Here are some other aftercare tips you should follow to ensure you get the best results:
- Wear a sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater every day.
- Moisturize your skin throughout the day.
- Wash your face with a mild cleanser and warm soap twice a day.
- Go makeup free for 12-24 hours.
- Avoid exercise for 48 hours.
- Don’t scratch or pick at your skin.
- Stay away from hot showers, hot baths, and hot tubs (warm showers are OK).
Once you’re healed, you’ll happily notice your skin is rejuvenated and your complexion is clearer. While most patients experience noticeable results after the first session, you might need 3-6 sessions to get the results you want. IPL’s results generally last for six months to a year, with many patients experiencing results for longer.
